How much water for rice in a rice cooker?

TL;DR: White rice in SpeediChef: 1 cup rice to 1.2 cups water (180ml cup). Brown rice: 1:1.5. Rinse white rice 2–3 times. Rest 5–10 minutes after cooking. See the full Kitchen Lab chart for basmati, sushi, and multi-grain.

The exact answer (SpeediChef cup)

Use the measuring cup that ships with SpeediChef. It holds about 180ml — less than a US cup. For white jasmine or long-grain rice, add 1.2 cups of cold water for every 1 cup of rinsed rice, then select White Rice. For brown rice, use 1.5 cups water and Brown Rice mode. These ratios come from SpeediChef Kitchen Lab batches in July 2026 on ASIN B0FSK24YXW.

What changes the water amount

Older dry rice absorbs more water. Heavy rinsing removes surface starch but also a little moisture — that is fine at 1:1.2. Soaked brown rice (30 minutes) cooks more evenly at the same 1:1.5 ratio. Above 3,000 feet elevation, add roughly one tablespoon of water per cup of rice. Fast Rice keeps the same water; it only shortens time.

Quick fix if the batch failed

Mushy rice: reduce water by 2 tablespoons next time and confirm you rinsed. Hard cores: add 2 tablespoons water or soak brown rice first. Scorched bottom: ensure the inner pot is seated on the induction element and you are not using Fast Rice with too little water.
