Can you put frozen vegetables in a rice cooker?
TL;DR: Yes — put frozen vegetables in the SpeediChef steamer basket over rice. Skip thawing for broccoli, peas, green beans, and mixed veg. Add delicate greens in the last few minutes. Do not pack the basket so tight that steam cannot circulate.

How to do it safely
Start rice and water in the inner pot as usual. Set the stainless steamer basket on top. Add a single layer of frozen vegetables (broccoli florets, peas, green beans, corn, mixed veg). Run White Rice or Brown Rice. Steam from the cooking cycle thaws and cooks the vegetables. Season after steaming so salt does not draw out excess water mid-cook.
Timing tips from Kitchen Lab
Dense frozen vegetables (carrots, broccoli) ride the full white-rice cycle well. Peas and spinach should go in for the last 3–5 minutes — open briefly, add, close. Fish fillets in the basket should be fresh or fully thawed for even cooking; keep frozen vegetables and raw proteins on separate nights if you are still learning timing.
- Do not put frozen vegetables in the rice water itself — they dilute ratios and turn mushy.
- Pat icy vegetables if heavily frosted so meltwater does not drip excessively.
Food safety note
Keep Warm is for finished hot food. Do not leave partially steamed frozen vegetables sitting in a cooling cooker. Serve promptly or refrigerate. Delay Start is for rice and water only — add the steamer basket contents when cooking begins.
